In a world that glorifies control, hustle, and constant movement, the concept of surrender can feel counterintuitive—even scary. But spiritual grounding often begins at the moment we choose to let go. True peace isn’t found in forcing outcomes or obsessing over timelines such as past, present or future what ifs. It’s found in surrender—trusting that The Creator knows what we need, when we need it, and HOW we need it.
Surrender is not weakness. It is not giving up on your dreams or abandoning responsibility. Instead, it is a sacred act of releasing what was never truly in your control to begin with. It is the decision to stop striving and start trusting. When we surrender, we create space for The Most High to move freely in our lives. We release the weight of worry and replace it with the grounding presence of The Most high’s guidance. (Psalms 55:22)
Letting go doesn’t mean we stop caring. It means we release attachment to how and when things happen. This is where the real growth begins. We may want answers today, but The Creator sees the full picture—past, present, and future. Trusting in that bigger plan is what anchors us during seasons of uncertainty. (Deuteronomy 5:32)
So how do we actually go about grounding ourselves in surrender?
1.) Practice Present Awareness
When your mind races toward the “what ifs,” gently bring it back to the now. Spiritual grounding happens in the present moment. Through breathwork, prayer, or quiet meditation, we remind ourselves that this moment is enough—and that we are not alone in it. Let go of needing to control every decision and move made and have a balance of plans and room for the unknown.
2.) Release Control Through Prayer
Speak honestly to The Creator. Share your fears, your hopes, your impatience. And then—release it. Let your prayers be offerings, not demands. Trust that they are heard, even when the answers aren’t immediate. As long as you are intentional, he will answer you in time. But keep in mind to allow however much time to pass and be open to different or new ways He may answer your prayers. In other words, mean what you say and say what you mean. (Psalms 37:4)
3.) Reflect and Realign
Notice what you’re clinging to. Is it a timeline? A specific outcome? A version of the past? Naming what you’re holding onto out-loud, to yourself, or even sharing to a trusted person allows you to begin releasing it. Journaling or in the moment reflection can help you tune into where you need to let go.
4.) Trust in the Wait
The space between desire and fulfillment can feel heavy. But waiting is not wasted. It is a holy pause—a time when faith is refined and trust deepened. The Creator is always working, even in silence. He doesn’t do things on our 24 hour 7 days a week clock, but slow and consist progression overtime. Just as we know the sun moves to set everyday, we may not see it moving by staring directly at it, but over a couple hours we see its in a different position than it was before.
5.) Stay Rooted in Truth
Surround yourself with The truth. Whether through scripture, affirmations, or wise trusted counsel, let reminders of The Most High’s timing keep you grounded. Allow yourself to stay accountable for actions that were in vain, but also where you wish to change and learn from past mistakes. Don’t forget where you came from or how you got to the place of perhaps regret. Your beauty may not be uncovered the way you imagined, but it will always unfold with purpose whether you realize/see it or not.
Surrender is an everyday choice, not a one-time event. There will be days you feel fully at peace, and others when doubt creeps in. That’s okay. Grounding yourself spiritually doesn’t mean you never struggle—it means you always return to the One who holds you, DESPITE the struggle.
When you surrender and trust The Creator’s timing, you trade anxiety for peace, and fear for faith. It may seem hard in times of having to make life or death decisions that may not affect you, but your loved ones life. These are the moments to put Him first no matter how it makes you feel. The only way to break the cycle of desperation, oppression, a wanting for things you need, and freedom of living for more than just food for the day, is purely and truly; trusting in The Most High. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
